PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION Stage 5 - Year 9 & 10 During Years 9 and 10, students will study the core course in PDHPE. Assessment is by set assessment tasks, class tests and examinations. Participation, uniform, co-operation and fitness levels are taken into consideration when writing reports. Students will receive a grade on their School Certificate for PDHPE. The course addresses a wide range of personal and community health issues such as sex education, nutrition, safety, fitness, HIV/AIDS, drug use, stress and child protection. Topics of this nature are important issues facing society today and will be taught in a manner which supports the role of parents and reflects the ideals of the school. The course also promotes physical activity and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. It will give students the opportunity to become skilled in a variety of physical activities such as games, dance, gymnastics, athletics and swimming.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION ELECTIVE Physical Education may be studied as an elective in Years 9 & 10. It is available to all students who wish to participate in a variety of sports, gymnastics, dance and aquatic activities.
The course comprises of 5 periods per cycle which includes three practical lessons, a lab lesson and a theory lesson. Practical Lessons In the practical periods students will have the opportunity to experience and improve their skills in the following areas:
LAB LESSONS Once a cycle students will learn what fitness is and how to carry out numerous fitness tests. Students will also learn how to referee a variety of sports, understand basic coaching principles and learn first-aid techniques.
THEORY LESSONS In the theory component of the Year 9 & 10 elective PE course, students will learn how the body works and moves. This will involve understanding how various systems in the body work including the skeletal and muscular system. The importance of physical fitness and how the body responds to exercise will also be emphasised in this section of the course.
WHAT STUDENTS WILL NEED Students who elect to do physical education will be required to bring their PE uniform for practical and lab lessons. Students will also have to pay entry fees to sporting venues when required For further information please contact:
