MATHEMATICS Stage 5 - Year 9 & 10

There are three levels of study in Mathematics:

      •   Advanced

      •   Intermediate

      •   Standard

The syllabuses have been developed to complement the Years 7 & 8 syllabuses and to incorporate areas of study deemed to be more worthy than some of the topics studied in the past.   The syllabuses have also been written to incorporate outcomes.

Students of Ryde Secondary College will be placed in one of the three courses based on their performance as evaluated in Mathematics during Year 8.   Throughout Terms 1 and 2 the Year 9 classes are constantly monitored, with the desire to make sure students are appropriately matched to the level attempted.

Students who excel in Year 8 Mathematics will be placed in the Advanced course.

Students who demonstrate overall competence in Year 8 will be placed in the Intermediate course.

Students who experience difficulty with Mathematics in Year 8 will be placed in the Standard course to enable them to obtain more practice with the basic skills and applications.

The nature of Mathematics requires students to revise constantly, as well as keep up with the daily class-work. The need to remember a store of knowledge is a problem faced by all students. Regular revision and homework is the key to success.

In year 10, Ryde Secondary College students are awarded grades A, B, C, D, E and N based on their achievements.  These achievements are reflected in the Course performance Descriptors as issued by the Board of Studies and are a judgement made by the school about each student's overall achievement of course objectives and outcomes.   Course Performance Descriptors are a series of statements which summarise observable and measurable features of students’ achievement and assist teachers to award grades to students based on descriptions of typical achievement from elementary to excellent.

If it can be shown that a student has failed to meet the outcomes of the course, the student will receive an ‘N’ award.

Entry to Mathematics courses in the Preliminary and HSC years is to a large extent based on the Levels of study in Years 9 & 10 and the performance of the student.
